July 4th Weekend
The weekend started with a few miles on Sadie the Mule. The kids had a great time riding around the farm with Uncle Steve getting ready for the party.
Then, Liz and Val came by for the annual horseback rides. Kizzie and Jack were patient with the rookie riders and many photographers standing by.
Jack is too old to ride, but the kids love to lead him around the farm. Here's Madison and Owen holding hands. LOVE IT!
Natalie "rode" Kizzie, too!
The kids fired up the smoke bombs pretty early in the afternoon.
Here's the Train Conductors with the littlest riders.
Madison sat by Trevin for the fireworks display. She made it all the way through the night...I think it was 10:45pm when I took her to bed!
Sunday morning, we made kraut. In this picture you can see lots of good old fashioned bohemian equipment. Jenny's on the cutter (where the cabbage is shredded), Liz is tamping the shredded cabbage (with an old table leg), and Uncle Joe is seaoning the tamped cabbage with salt and caraway seed (and tasting often). We took turns on the shredder and tamping. It took all morning to shred 3 huge boxes of cabbages and they all fit in that crock. Now, the cabbage will sit and "sour" until it is "done" (very technical recipe) and then it will be canned.
